After Reading This, You’ll Never Wear Crocs Again!
The early 2000’s is when the Crocks first hit the market, but they became popular ten years later. These rubber shoes that have odd shape became the alternative to indoor footwear, flip-flops, sandals and shoes.
People find them comfortable and like their weird appearance.
However, some studies show that these rubber clogs i.e. Crocs might have a serious effect when it comes to your health.
Crocs and Foot Health
Since Crocs have become so vastly popular, especially among children and adolescents, many podiatrists have been consulted on the effect that they have on our foot health. Their answers were less than positive. According to one podiatrist, Dr. Meagan Leahy, Crocs are not a suitable replacement for proper footwear.
“Unfortunately, Crocs are not suitable for all-day use,” Leahy says. “These shoes do not adequately secure the heel. When the heel is unstable, toes tend to grip which can lead to tendinitis, worsening of toe deformities, nail problems, corns and calluses.”
One of the most common forms of tendonitis that affects the foot is plantar fasciitis. This is when the plantar fascia, the tendon which connects your heel bone to your toes, becomes inflamed and weakened. This can cause excruciating pain and can also disable movement . For more info, watch this:
In serious cases, plantar fasciitis can result in a bone spur. This is a build up of calcium on the heel which results in a protrusion of bone to develop on the spot where the tendon connects to the ankle. This can cause further pain and also requires incredibly invasive surgery to correct .
Copies of Crocs and Cancer
In Germany, there was a lab analysis that came to a conclusion that, copies of Crocs i.e. fake Crocs, as well as rubber cogs that are similar to Crocs, have substances that are highly cancerous. These substances can be absorbed when in contact with the skin.
Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) that is a German broadcasting institution sent to a lab in Germany 10 different types of plastic cogs for analysis.
According to the results of the analysis, from the 10 different types, 6 of them had polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are carcinogenic chemicals.
The National Toxicology Program, published a health document i.e. 13th Report on Carcinogens (RoC), which reports that there is an increased risk of developing skin cancer, liver cancer, and lung cancer when exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
The American brand Crocs, however, did not have polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in their shoes. According to the analysis, it had some substances that might lead to allergic reactions and skin irritation.
If You Wear Crocs
Make sure to wear socks if you still choose to wear Crocs. Why socks? Because wearing socks can help to reduce the amount of contact between the shoes and your skin.
Also, make sure that you are buying the real Crocs because the fake one contains chemicals that might cause cancer.
It is also advised to smell the shoes before purchasing them. If they have a strong or sweet smell being emitted from them, this could mean that the shoes are releasing possibly harmful solvents.
